north carolina state fair
Oct 16th
pickles, hushpuppies, ribbon fries, and chocolate-covered cheesecake were the menu items of my choice this year at the north carolina state fair. i’ve been going to the state fair since i was a little kid, but this was the first time that i had ever been on opening night. at the same time, it was magan’s first time EVER going to the state fair. we had a blast. me, magan, momma, and the girls walked every square inch of the fairgrounds looking at everything from giant pumpkins to baby pigs. many people love to go to the fair and ride all the crazy rides, but this kid does not like to ride anything that is constructed for a temporary amount of time. therefore, i’m left to eat and look at all the exhibits. i believe the fair has food that you cannot find anywhere else on this planet. the newest craze was fried coke. how in the world do you fry coke? who knows what the craze next year will be. after we filled our stomachs with greasy food, we headed to the concert of the night, chris tomlin. $10 for one of the best concerts i have ever been to. it was less of a show and more of a worship service. he played a lot of his older songs, but a few new ones and they were all awesome. i left dorton arena with not much of a voice left. i would love to get to see him in concert again sometime, hopefully at the passion conference in january.
magan and i meet dave and steph after we got done at the fair to hang out for a bit then magan and i headed home to get some rest before we had to head to chowan the next day for homecoming. it was a great time. we got to hang out with some good ol’ chowan friends and we tried to cheer the hawks (aka braves) to victory, but they came up short. after we got home from the game we spent what time was left of the weekend getting some much needed rest.
on thursday i’ll be headed out to k-town to visit magan and her family. magan will be on fall break. we’re gonna get to see both of her brothers play football and see her sister cheer for senior night. we’re also gonna be working at american eagle, but that’s a whole different story that i may write a whole nother post on. anyways, it should be a lot of fun. i’m still searching for a job. i know God is going to open the right door at the right time. until then, i’m still freelancing. i’ll keep you posted.

this ain't like chowan
Oct 3rd

this past weekend i was introduced to my first taste of appalachian football fever. i didn’t get to come up and visit magan during the football season last year because i was working at a church in windsor, nc, but this fall i’m free on the weekends, which means i get to travel up to boone as often as i want. as all of you may know (unless you’ve been living under a rock) that appalachian won the division I-AA national championship in football last year. as a result, everyone in boone lives for appalachian football. i had only experienced small football games from high school and even smaller ones at chowan, so this whole weekend was a brand new thing to me.
it started on friday afternoon when magan and i went to the bookstore to stock up on some appalachian apparel. i got me a long sleeve nationship championship shirt and a national championship hat. magan also picked up a national championship shirt. that night, there was a lip sync contest, bon fire, pep ralley, and fireworks. it was incredibly cold outside, but it was very fun. it was funny laughing at people making fools of themselves during lip sync. it reminded me of that time i rapped “i’ve got the power” in an american idol thing at chowan and won 3rd place.
the next morning was the parade. definitely better than most parades i’ve ever seen in person, almost as good as santa claus being pulled by a john deere tractor in the fuquay christmas parade. then there was tailgating. now i’ve only tailgated once or twice in my 22 years and both both of those times were with dr. frazier at chowan football games. i guess you could count the years of camping out at nascar races, but football is a different story. anyways, we went to the campus crusade tailgate and hung out there for a few hours, eating food and hanging out with friends.
once we were full, we made our way into the staduim to wait for the game to start. seats filled up fast. i never heard an official count, but people guessed there would be about 30,000 people there, and i don’t doubt that one bit. we stood the whole time and there was no room to move. appalachian laid it on elon and it was 31-10 by the end of the first half. magan and i decided that we had had enough by halftime and just headed back to the apartment to chill for the rest of the evening. i think the final score was like 45-21, appalachian the winners.
all in all, it was a great weekend. i can’t wait to head back up to boone for another game. i’ll be headed to chowan in two weeks for my homecoming. it should be a whole lot of fun hanging out and seeing old friends. magan and i will be traveling up to the boro as well as jenni and craig. we’ll probably do some tailgating of our own and see if we can’t cheer the hawks (they’ll always be the braves to me) to victory.
